Day 7 - Market spying

Nope, sorry folks. This is not a picture of the Fayuca. Or the mercadito de Xonaca. Or the tiangis de la Piedad (all these places are otudoor markets in Puebla).

This is a picture of the Marché du Canal de Saint Martin. Every week on Wednesdays and Fridays an open door market sets up camp on the covered part of the Canal, almost at the junction with the Bastille roundabout. They sell everything from fresh fruit and fish and cheese to roasted chicken and used clothes.

And every week I miss the market because I'm travelling to work underground in the metro, just beneath it. By the time I get leave the office the only thing that's left of the market is stacked trash bags by the sidewalk after everyone has packed up their trucks and vans and left for the day.

Still, this week, since the weather in Paris has finally begun to improve I've been walking to work in the mornings. It makes for a nice 40 minute stroll and allows me to listen to all the CDs I've recently uploaded to my iPod and not yet had an opportunity to listen to.

But I'm digressing....

The point is, when I walked past the market on wednesday I didn't dare take out my camera in fear of being accused of industrial sabbotage... or simply of snooping around.

But this morning I was wearing blue jeans and white sneakers (it's "casual friday" at the office) and so I had the perfect desguise on: an American lost in Paris with a digital camera and an annoying trigger friendly thumb. Nobody said anything when I took this picture. But I still felt pretty nervous and didn't dare go to the actual market staying instead on the (safe) sidewalk on the other side of the street where all the trucks are parked. Yeah, ok... I'm a fraidy cat. Maybe next week I'll suck it up and dare to take a picture of the actual market.

Anyway, voilà! That's the story of today's shot!

Fned.

P.S. Those mercado bags sure do remind me of el mercadito de Xonaca though....

Just wondering, but are people in France very suspicious of those with cameras?

That would be sad, I plan on taking a MILLION GAZILLION pictures when I get to Paris.

And no, I'm not exaggerating on the quantity of photos that will be snapped, at all :)

OH I'VE BEEN THERE! I'VE EVEN BOUGHT STUFF THERE! How neat to see it on your blog.
Thanks for braving your way through your fear and snapping the pic! How much you wanna bet that most of them will realize you only had their best interests at heart?

Mamacita: Not at all... Parisiens are used to their city being photographed inside out and for the most part they don't mind. I guess I was pretty nervous because I'm pretty new to this "photographing on an everday basis" thing. I'm more of a "my camera comes out it's bouch when we're on vacations" kind of girl! ;)

Minshap: Really? I couldn't remember if you had. Glad you licked the pic. :D

I didn't lick it, but I liked it!

I totally get the fear of being considered a tourist, haha. I've gotten over it, there are just too many interesting things to shoot here, even outside the tourist zones. I often tell people "soy fotografa profesional, no soy pinche turista!" if I feel too embarassed, LOL. I know, "professional" is really pushing it, teehee.

Minshap: oopppsss! I new that! ;)

Cancun Canuck: You are totally a profesional photographer AND blogger! CancunCaunuck is a must-read blog on the web!!! ;)

Ale: hahaha, I know... but I think the graffitied van on the side totally gives away the fact that this pic wasn't taken in Mexico. People in Mexico "naco-up" their cars, they don't spray paint graffitti on them. ;)
