Day 24 - My Challenge

Remember how yesterday I posted that if someone asked me in the spur of the moment to prepare a dish with whatever I had in the refrigerator, I would put out the cereal box and bowls and start pouring out the milk?

Well, guess what? Today I proved that under extreme circumstances (and I mean extreme!) I am capable of figuring out how to turn on the stove (without burning down the house!)

We had invited my cousins Steve and Ilene over for dinner tonight as they are visiting in Paris this weekend. While I was enjoying life at a bachelorette party yesterday, hubby had carefully selected tonight’s menu and dutifully went out shopping for all the ingredients. I like it when he surprises me, so I didn’t even bother asking what he was making us for dinner on my way out the house this morning.

Then the worst of my nightmares came true: hubby called me up in the afternoon to tell me he had just been informed of a very important management meeting he had to attend that evening and he wouldn’t get home in time to prepare dinner.

Oh God, please, no.

TOTAL. PANIC. ATTACK.

There was no way I could call and cancel since I had no way to reach my cousins.

I could feel my feet going numb.

Hubby reassured me the menu he had selected was relatively easy to make: an entrée of green salad with roasted goat cheese on nut tartines and mushroom risotto for the main course! (thankfully he’d prepared dessert the night before: homemade tiramisu)

Uh-oh…. Salad, I figured I could handle (it's just washing the lettuce, right?). Risotto…. that’s another story. Isn’t that supposed to be like Italian or something? I barely know how to cook rice (and I’m talking about the one that come in a precooked bag you just dump in boiling water for 10mins), how in hell’s name was I going to make RISOTTO!!!!!!!

Couldn’t we be original and have tiramisu for the entrée, cereal for the main course and tiramisu again for dessert???

I could feel my hands going numb.

I got home and opened the cook book (as hubby was attending his freakin’ meeting I couldn’t even count on him being on the phone for moral support). I decided the only way I would be able to do this was to approach the problem in a structured way, just like I do when I have to handle a sensitive file at the office: spread out all the elements in front of me and proceed to organize them in a methodical and logical way before tackling the problem itself.

So out came the butter, and the garlic, and the onion, and the little green leaves I don’t know what they’re called, and the mushrooms and the wine, and the cubes of compact stuff you dump in boiling water, and the risotto grains.

I took a deep breath. I flexed my fingers. I rolled up my sleeves (oops, got butter on them in the process…) and decided to get on with it.

Following the instructions as closely as if they were the steps to disarm a bomb, slowly the mass of ingredients sitting in front of me started to look like a “Something”. I discovered I can chop, I can sizzle, I can boil, I can stir, I can pour (sort of) and best of all, I think I can even measure quantities!!!

I wont deny there were a few little mishaps in the process -- like when I mistook 120ml for 1.20L and poured the entire vegetable broth (or whatever it’s called) into the risotto… thankfully a quick look at the picture in the recipe book made me realize my mistake and my P.A. problem-solving instincts kicked in (preventing me from freeze-panicking). I drained the risotto into a separate iron bowl-like utensil and started over again…

Slowly my creation began to take form and by the time hubby got home all there was left to do was uncork the wine to let it breathe (by then, I could have used a little breathing exercise too!)

I am proud to report that dinner was served on time, no one was intoxicated and the cereal box stayed in the pantry!

Dude! I know I don't know you, but I almost feel *proud* of you. How weird is that? The only problem now is that now people are going to expect you to cook more often...

Whoa! Proud of you, girl... but then I always knew you could do it! If it tasted anywhere as luscious as it looks in the picture or even half as scrumptious as your description of the making of it, then it was certainly a winner! Touché darling fned...

Excellent. You institutionally did the things that guarantee success. You didn't panic and you followed the directions. You got out all the ingredients first, perfect! This is actually an important technique called "mise en place" which since it's a French term I don't need to translate for you. To read more about mise en place try this article
http://www.reluctantgourmet.com/mis_en_place.htm
You, are a natural! I am very impressed. Once you have made one risotto you can make other risottos and dazzle everyone. Here is an easy (honest, you do need a crock pot though) recipe for you, it's a breakfast risoto but I think it can be a dessert too http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/06/crockpot-breakfast-risotto.html.

I hate spell check! I meant to write instinctually and it got changed to institutionally! argh....I feel dumb when that happens and I don't notice.

yey! I'm with Samantha...Very proud of you, I'm still amazed that you took it calmly, I would have panicked...and I like to cook!

Samantha: Thanks!!! And you're right... just last night hubby came home and innocently asked "what's for dinner". I didn't blink and eyelash and replied "cereal"... we went out for pizza. LOL

Minshap: Thanks mom! I guess I do have Carlos' genes in me somewhere... they're dormant genes though...

Heather: Thanks! It always help to have photoshop enhance the colors though... (j/k)

Theresa: Wow!!! I didn't know there was a "mise en place" technique that applied to cooking!!! We use it on projects! Also thanks for the link. I knew I was going to like the article even before I clicked it. It could have been the "Reluctant Gourmet" thing... kinda rang a bell somehow ;)

Hélène: It's a good begining... and a great ending too! Not about to do THAT again anytime soon! :s

Mariella: But see, that's the thing... this wouldn't ever happen to you... Sonny is just too nice to ever drop a bomb like this on a poor unsuspecting and unprepared you. :D

You can achieve anything now!

Wow Fned that looks like a gourmet meal! What in the world is is, and do you have the recipe (you think i'm joking, but no, I'm not)

I think you've proven yourself here - especially to Hubby who may want to test your culinary skills again now and then (now that he sees you can, in fact, cook) LOL.

great job, nicely done!

Mexico Way: Shhhhh!!!!Let's not give that impression to H-U-B-B-Y..... LOL

That girl: Risotto from what I learned is a type of rice... the difference is the grains are larger and they absrob more liquid so they tend to be big in juicy. I'm sure you can find a great receipie of Risotto in Theresa's cooking blog. Here's the basic receipe I followed:

1. Simmer onions and garlic in some butter and olive oil.

2. Mix in Risotto grains and fry till they are transparent.

3. Meanwhile, (and this is tricky part that requires *gulp* multitasking) fry chanterelle mushrooms in another pan w/some butter. Let sit when done.

4. Make a 1.5 liter of vegetable broth and start by pouring 1 cup of the broth into the risotto mix and stirring till all the liquid is aborbed/evaporated, then another cup and again stir till dry, then another cup and so on till you finish the broth. By then the risotto should be done.

5. Add mushrooms into mix and serve hot.

I know, it sounds easy peasy right, but I assure *looking nervously at hubby*, it's NOT!!!

Nice job! I wish my hubby had 1/4 the drive to cook that yours has! Instead I'm the one who has to cook all the time. Incidentally, we eat out alot! :)

Mexpat: Yeah... but I bet your hubby is a killer at washing up after dinner! That's the perfect compromise I find. :D
