Doctorfobia

In my 8 things about me post I failed to mention one thing which I consider quite defining. My aversion for doctors. I admit I did this intentionally because it turns out both my husband's parents are doctors and I know they read this blog very often (bonjour Adrien & Hélène!). I certainly don't want them to feel offended because it is nothing personal against them or their profession.... but I just can't help it: I HATE DOCTORS.

I always have. Always will.....

Any doctors: ophthalmologists, general MD's, gynaecologists even non-threathening dermatologists!.... It doesn't matter, if their name includes the prefix D-R I will unconsciously take 3 steps back.

You can type it out to mean anything you want (a childhood drama, fear of the needle, etc...) and I'll even admit that a very wrong diagnosis which changed my life (and quite a few others close to me!) might have a little to blame.... but deep down I think it all boils down to this: How can you trust someone to know you better than you know yourself?

So it sounds irrational but there you have it.

Each time that I've had to see a doctor I have always left their office feeling that they got it all wrong ... and, don't believe me if you don't want to, but a lot of the times I was right!

Thank heavens (knock on wood + knocking on my head *wink at mexpat*) I haven't had to see that many doctors throughout my life (except my PIL that is ;)) but that's mainly because there were a lot of times when instead of going to the Dr, I preferred auto diagnosis (thank you internet!) and self prescription (thank you mexico pharmacies with your "no questions asked" policy!)...............Ok, now I know I've gotten my grandma all worried.....

Don't worry Mimi! It's impossible to do this in France! :D

When I arrived in Paris I realized I would have to be much more careful of my health if I wanted to avoid going to see the man in the white lab coat... plus, everything is sold with a prescription and with the crazy health system they got going here .... well, let's just say I can count on the fingers of my hands the amount of times I've been in a Dr's consultation room in the past 6 years (and I still have some fingers left!)

This doesn't mean I haven't been sick... it just means that I've made two important discoveries: 1/ the amazing powers of aspirin and 2/ I have a pretty high pain tolerance.

Which brings me to today's dilemma: my toothache.

I have a tooth that's been killing me for the past year (literally! I called my dentist earlier and checking my record he realized that my last appointment had been in November 2006!)... It began as a little pain which after 2 months would not go away... then suddenly it did but by then I'd gathered up my courage and already made an appointment with the...... *shivering!* D-O-C-T-O-R, cf my Nov 06 appointment .... after using that awful little bzzzzzing thingy and basically drilling a hole in my poor tooth he came to the conclusion my tooth was dead (error #1) He then put on a cap to fill in the hole and make sure I didn't get any further pain (error #2).... Said cap fell off 2 weeks later.... (error #3)..... Like I said... it took over 12 months and me getting pretty tired of having food stuck in my tooth at every meal before I went back to see him last week.... and get this: he put on the same type of cap... again! (error #4)..... Of course, the cap fell off .... AGAIN (do I have to keep counting???) and now best of all my tooth, my poor drilled-in, cap-missing, never-once-hurt-me-in- those-12months tooth is now hurting like h*ll !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, people, can you really blame me for pledging alliance to the allmighty Aspirin God? (which btw I'm going to go buy a whole bucket of a soon as I finish this post!)?

Be nice to your in-laws Fned!!!

I am with you on this one though, I avoid going to the doctor as much as possible, at least in Chile anyways. Not that all doctors in the U.S. are amazing and all doctors in Chile are bad, but in the U.S. I had one doctor that I REALLY trusted and could count on. And here I have nothing but one bad experience after another (misdiagnosing, giving me medicine I was allergic to, after I clearly stated and wrote in their little forms all my allergies, etc).

I stay away as much as possible, and like you said, the over the counter medicine is a huge factor in that. In Chile they are very laid back in that respect.

I'm so totally with you, I HATE the doctor (and the dentist!). I took a lot of anatomy, biology, chemistry, physiology in Uni, that combined with the internet means a lot of self diagnoses and treatment too. I love the pharmacies here, I can call and have antibiotics (or anything!) delivered in twenty minutes. Well, no "fun" stuff with codeine or valium, but good stuff nonetheless.

Hope the tooth is feeling better!

AMEN SISTAH

And, um, get the tooth pulled already!!! I had a similar issue, and I got fed up and had it pulled. It was the last tooth anyways. Who cares. Got it ripped out and I've never been happier! Oh! Except go to a different dentist to do it!

I thought I heard a hollow, wooden sound! Just kidding! Just kidding!

Yes- I can't wait to stroll up to the pharmacy here in Mexico and just ask for my birth control pill and have them hand it to me.

Even without insurance I will pay $10 less for the same pill in Mexico than I pay in the US WITH insurance... and insurance already covers 1/2 the cost!

My husband gets all upset with me,because I haven't been to the doctor in 4 years. I haven't been really sick either. He wants me to go, and when the doctor asks "why are you here?" what am I supposed to say? I am a big believer in paracetemol 500s (generic tylenol) combined with rest and fluids. I also self medicate when I know what I have. How many sinus infections does it take to realize that you have another one?

Sorry everyone, been out of the blog circuit for a few days....

Mamacita: Belive me, I wish I could find a doctor I COULD trust, but I guess it's like finding a hairdresser that actually does what you asked them to do to your hair!... Chances to encounter either are probably next to zilch. :(

CancunCanuck: Tooth's doing much better thankfully (I'm on antibiotics right now)... Lucky you that you can tell your penicilin from your paracetamol... I'm still not 100% sure which one is for when you have a nasty cough (JUST KIDDING!)

Mexico Way... Uhm.... I actually would like to keep my poor tooth if that's ok with you... the others would probably feel lonely if I had it pulled out... Dr put me on a mean-bacteria-fighting-white-and-blue-pill that has done wonders for the tooth pain... wonder if I can also take it for PMS.... (AGAIN, j/k)

Mexpat: Urgh... getting tha pill here has been a major hassle... once a month I have to find a different pharmacy and put on what I like to call my "poor little mexican lost in Paris" show... I'll walk in and go heavy on my accent explaing that "in Méjico Doctor prescribe for my acne, me no need prescription" ... 9 times out of 10 they'll sell me ONE box "to help me out while I get settled in Paris and find myself a proper doctor"... *rolling eyes*

Theresa: Try having a husband who's BOTH parents are doctors... it drives hubby nuts to see me go through all those hoops just to avoid going to the DR...... but hey, the way I see it, until I'm actually at death's bed... I ain't going to go see no mata-sanos! LOL.
