First of all, it's important to say that, if like me, you have straight hair, in order for the chignon to stay up you musn't wash your hair that day (eiww... I know) otherwise the chignon will just slide down no matter how many pins you use.
Speaking of pins, these are the ones you must use:

As you can see, they have a sort of zigzag part and this is what keeps the pin in place. When you pin it in your hair, you must "wiggle" as you go and this will prevent it from falling out, voilà l'arme secrète! ;)
Start out with your hair combed straight...

... and make a pony tail at the base of your neck....

Twirl the ponytail as tightly as possible....

.... and then twirl it around itself in a "donut" style, kindda like in the pic below (please ignore toilet in the background)....

..... with one hand hold the "donut" in place and with the other start putting in the pins (remember to wiggle!).

.... Put at least 2 pins on each side of the bun and 2 at the bottom before letting go of it. Then, depending on how tight you feel it you can add more.....

And voilà !!

:)

Thanks it looks great! And you're hair is really pretty. I guess I sort of have been doing that except that I use those small claw clips and can sometimes get away with one, and if that doesn't hold, then two. It goes a little faster than with pins. I think I might need about 50 since my hair is so long!
Now, see, it's really similar to the no-pins chignon which is really chingon. oops...
But yours definitely looks more chic! Only proglem is, those ripply pins don't have protected tips and as I recall I once tried to use them when making a regular "American" bun way back when, and they hurt my scalp when I pushed them in... luckily for now I have extremely short hair and the exciting thing about short haircuts is that you can give yourself a fresh new look any time you want by simply raking your fingers through your hair!
Lovely! Even with my hair phobia I can appreciate how pretty your hair is, great job mami!
Mexico Way: I agree, the pins takes more time and in the morning (when I'm usually late already -thanks to my mexican genes;) it's not really an option. But the claw clips don't hold my bangs tight enough and they usually get in my face. Pffff!!!... not easy being a lady...
Minshap: Now how come you never tought me how to make a regular "American" bun?!?!?!? Doesn't that fall in the "things mothers teach daughters" category?
Cancun Canuck: you lost me at 'hair phobia'... that just cracks me up. :D
How could I teach you when I could never make a proper one myself?? That's why I opted for the lazy way out - NO PINS! You just pull the hair through the donut and hope it holds for a couple of hours. Then you get into a frenzy of constantly "playing" with your hair, winding it up again and again throughout the day - (and playing with your hair is something MY MOTHER said was a no-no)... so, THAT'S why I finally opted for BRAIDS!!! And you can at least feel cherished by knowing that YOUR mother braided your hair and taught you how to make FRENCH BRAIDS!!!! And let's not forget those fabulous MEXICAN 5-PLAITED braids!!! Talk about a fabulous hairstyle... now let's see some pictures of that!!! YOU LOOK GORGEOUS WITH ONE OF THOSE!
