Mario Bros, Buffy Summers and Harry Potter

Yes, that is correct ... André and I are 8 again.

Or so it would have seemed to anyone had they seen us this past weekend.

It seems all the excitement and hoopla of the weekend before (André having turned 30 and suddenly making us feel "old" and all) left us pretty tired and non-motivated to do anything too serious or adult-y..... so we decided this would be one of our "nothing weekends"... only with a twist ....

I had downloaded (bad, I know) the entire Season 4 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and once I started with Episode 1 it was like I couldn't stop... by Episode 8 I knew I was in for a Buffy marathon... (to André's utter horror)

I don't know what it is about this series.... when it came out in Mexico I couldn't stand to watch it, it seemed sooooooo stupid: vampires, monsters, witches.... but somehow I got hooked on it here while flipping through the channels on tv and having to choose between that and "la petite maison sur la prairie" .... eventually watching random episodes made me want to understand the story so I downloaded Season 1 to watch while doing my bike in the morning and it kindda snowballed from there.... I think what is so great about this show is that if you can get past the (pathetic) special effects and the (crummy) props you actually have a pretty entertaining story with interesting characters... and with each passing season you see that the show grows more mature and tackles more than just stories about vampires and slayers.... eventually you realize this show is all about women empowerment. Anyway... I guess the fact that we now live in a HP era also adds to the show's "charm" (no pun interneded).

Which brings me to our next leisure activity of this weekend .... Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.... you all remember me devouring HP7 during our trip to the Caribe this summer (and reading it all over again as soon as I finished it).... well... André hadn't really been too enthousiastic about reading the wizard's book and even though I had another crispy new copy waiting for him when we got back to France he didn't seem too eager to start it..... that is until he saw me hitting the Buffy zone... I guess he tried finding something that would be entertaining to do while I hogged up the TV and found himself sucked into the magical world of Harry, Ron and Hermione. Like me, once he was on a roll nothing prevented him from turning those pages. I think he downed the first 500 pages Saturday afternoon alone !

By now you're probably thinking we spent the weekend in totally different worlds (me in Sunnydale and him in the Muggle world) but we did get some mutual quality time squeezed in ... over a game or two of Mario brothers. Turns out that with the Wii you can download old Nintendo games from the Internet and that is how we got the old Super Mario Bros which came out back in 1993! So we re-lived our old Nintendo "glory days" trying to find all the secret worlds and mystery keys in the wonderful world of Mario and Yoshi... and even though 14 years have gone by that game is still great!

So yeah... we had a pretty un-eventful weekend (if you don't count trying out a new cheese that André brought home Sunday)... and sure, I didn't step outside the apartment for two days straight... but hey, it was one great weekend!

Peace out.
Fned.

don't quite get the meaning of "fried" at the end of your post, but will say - what a lovely way to spend the weekend... I myself being totally hooked on nostalgia. But hey, if you're looking for deep meaning and people (women AND men) empowerment, dare I mention the best option for serious series viewing? You know, Felicity!! As for nintendo tidbits, I read somewhere that another Mario sequel was made but never went public... just saw that in the news somewhere... and finally, I meant to tell you about 2 weeks ago when I saw it was the anniversary of the creation of the Smurfs!!!! And what was interesting to find out is that they are a FRENCH CREATION (can't spell out the original name in French, but you can surely investigate). Now that brought back memories of you as a little girl with Papá Pitufo and Pitufina and all the rest... I'll try to find the link and send it to you... meanwhile, back to reality!

Hey mom,

Tried getting Felicity but impossible. They don't sell the DVDs anywere and same goes for the Internet ... so Buffy it is for now.

The Pitufos here are called Les Strumphs (I can spell it but don't ask me to pronounce it!) but I think they're belgium and not french though ... maybe André can clear that out of us..... and yeah... they were really cool!

P.S. What "fried" comment at the end of my post?
