Could it be?

Something funny happened to me yesterday while I was walking home.....

.... but first a little background so you can understand why it's funny.

Ever since I came to France, André never passes up a chance to remind me that I am a foreigner. Not in a mean way of course, on the contrary. I think he's secretly proud of the fact that I am not a french girl and therefore I think, act, talk, dress and even walk (I'm told) differently than most girls here....

So even though people are surprised to find out that I am mexican (I get a lot of "but you don't look mexican, you're blond!"... to which I always respond : "yeah, I guess we can't all look as hot as Salma Hayek or Eva Longoria!" .......... jeez!) they can tell that I'm not french.

Over the years I've realized some of the things that give me away even before I open my mouth, like for instance the fact that I still wear New Balance sneakers with my jeans (no french girl would be caught dead wearing white running shoes!) or my hair up in a pony tail (pony tails are so fad -- "bland") or the fact that I love to wear sweatshirts during the weekends or that I like to paint my toe nails if I'm wearing flip-flops (thanks Jorge for that one!)....

Slowly, I've come to adopt certain fashion trends that allow me to at least plant "a reasonable doubt" ... like wearing all black and only a single vintage long neckless to add la touche feminine... or to swich my old and comfy back pack for a fashionable hand bag even if I'm only going to the groceries store, or to wear kid slippers instead of sneakers if I want comfortable shoes to walk in....

.... but still, the moment I open my mouth and that first bonjour leaves my lips... I get THE question: vous avez un petit accent mademoiselle... vous venez d'où? (you have a cute little accent miss, where're you from?)

Which brings us back to my funny story:

Last night I was walking back home and this guy started flirting with me on the street. Just your typical idiot trying to get my attention with such classic ones like: "vous avez de très beaux yeux mademoiselle" (you have very pretty eyes miss) and "peux je vous accompagner quelque part?" (can I walk you somewhere?).... I finally got fed up, stopped dead in my tracks, turned around and said: "no hablo francés, me vas a dejar en paz o que?" (I don't speak french, are you're going to leave me alone or what?)....

.... to which he replied: "ouais, ouais, fais pas la maline, ça se voit que l'espagnol n'est pas ta langue!" (yeah, right.... don't play coy with me, I can tell spanish is not your mother language) .... after which he turned around and walked away.

I laughed the entire way back home.
