I’ve heard a lot of horror Dentist stories (that’s right Jonna, I mean YOU) and I’ve had my own share of crappy work done by so called “professionals” which as some of you know ended me at the ER at 4am not long ago… but I thank my lucky stars….I’ve finally found My Savior.
This dentist is GOOD. He was referred to me by another dentist friend of my PIL and honestly it’s the first time I can totally relax when I’m sitting on that chair. I don’t even remember what his name is because he speaks really really low and doesn’t say much anyway (his greeting when I arrive to his office is usually “please sit down and open your mouth”), he barely ever explains what he’s doing in my mouth… but none of this bothers me… I TELL YOU HE’S GOOD.
I will forever be in debt to him as he was able to SAVE my tooth, which I had already given up for lost. Long story short: I came *this close* to having my tooth pulled out because none of the previous dentists I'd gone to had been able to reach my root canals to extract the nerve and instead had totally wreck my tooth by viciously scrapping it with that electronic zzzzz-ing tool they use until it was virtually impossible to even spot the root canal entries – but for the past three weeks My Savior has been working manually and has finally managed to reached both my root canals and treat the infection growing beneath them thus preventing me from loosing the tooth alltogether. He has such a gentle touch that even though my appointments with him rarely last under an hour an a half of drilling and sticking needles down my teeth I NEVER EVER FEEL ANY PAIN!!!
I swear to God, last time I even feel asleep while he was working on my mouth! I only woke up because he raised his voice (to normal human being level) to let me know my mouth was closing and I was biting his fingers.
Whenever I used to go to see my old dentist, I would always, always, always have a toothache in the two hours following having left his office. I could tell he worked fast and absentmindedly in order to be able to keep his jam-packed schedule of never ending patients. My Savior only takes 4 patients in the afternoon and so this way he can dedicate the necessary time with each of us without rushing.
I think his office is also part of the charm. He’s got the whitest most pristine clean office I’ve ever seen (I'm not sure you can tell just how white his walls are on today's pic). When you walk into his office you suddenly feel like you’re in a different world. He has a huge bonsai tree in his waiting room and a lovely view of the green trees growing in the garden outside that contrasts beautifully with the white walls and ceiling. Best of all, you face this view the entire time you’re sitting in the patient’s chair…
I still have a couple of appointments to go before I can officially put my tooth ordeal behind me but at least I’ve finally found a doctor who has restored my faith in the profession.

You fell asleep???!!!! OMG!! I'm looking at air fares Cancun to Paris right now. You know how people from the north love to combine a trip to the beach in Mexico with an expensive dental visit and pretend they are actually saving money? Well, I'm on it. I could visit Paris under the guise of going to the dentist!
Seriously though, I think finding a good dentist is a defining moment in your life. I had one in California that it took years to find but then he took care of my teeth for 25 years, no pain and no fuss. As it happened, he retired the same year I did so I was without a dentist again. Hey! No dentist, might as well sell everything and move to Mexico. Made sense to me at the time.
I can understand as I never saw a dentist willingly in Atlanta for the 8 years I lived there, I would instead come home (to Cali) and pay cash to see our family dentist who has been taking care of our family's teeth for over 20 years. Hold on to this guy Fned, I'm so glad your tooth issues are over =)
Jonna and Mariella: that's the thing, how can you tell the "good" ones from the "bad" when you DONT have a family doctor who's known you for 20+ years? That I think is the big problem for us expats...
Also the fact that often you only get to the "good" ones with a "palanca"... someone who was recommended to you by someone else. Like with the mafia.
I used to pick my doctors in fonction of how far their office was from home/work or if they would accept to see me on Saturdays. But those days are over. I am know willing to bribe for the name of a good physician. Next on my list: a dermatologist.
And Jonna: If you come to Paris I can hook you up with my dentist. No problemo.

What a gem! Only 4 patients in an afternoon? That is seriously unheard of nowadays... he's a keeper.
That girl: Tell me about it! Now... if I could just find his equivalent in a hairdresser in this city, I'm set! :D

I am petrified of going to the dentist; but got lucky and found one here that is really gentle. I still white knuckle it though, waiting for the pain to come, so far it hasn't. I can't imagine going to sleep in the dentist chair!!
Brenda: I know the feeling of pure and sheer happiness at finding a GOOD, CAREFUL and SENSITIVE dentist!!! Glad you found "your savior" too! ;)
