The Vampires made me do it

(alternative title: Twlight Zone moment II)

Remember the last time I dropped off the face of the earth and went AWOL from the bloggersphere for a few weeks? I bet my parents remember that, my husband certainly does.

Sorry folks I haven’t been around lately. It’s not like stuff hasn’t been happening or that I’m not thinking of you guys and wondering what’s going on in your lives…. It’s just that I haven’t had the time, nor frankly the desire, to do anything else.

All this is the fault of the Vampires….. and the Werewolves….. well, yeah ok, and Bella is to blame too I guess. You see, I made the (grave, GRAVE) mistake of following Mexpat’s advice posted on her blog a few months ago and started reading the Twilight series (I hear you groaning out there). I wasn’t planning it would be so captivating though, although I guess I should have known something was up when the books were out of sale at both American Bookstores I went to in Paris. I finally laid my hands on the first book, Twilight, last week and read it in one night. That’s how bad the situation is. I went back to the bookstore the next day at opening hours and bought the remaining three books in the series (New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn). And my mind is blank from that day on up until today when my eyes lingered over the final period on the final page of the final book.

Yes, Yes, YES, the books are in the Young Adult fiction category which make them a little too young for me. And yes, Yes, YES, the story is MEGA cheesy and a little floozy. And YES, YES, YES… I do have a little problem with Stephenie Meyers’ somewhat self-righteous idea of pre marital sex…….

But still, I’m a sucker for love stories stronger than death, which is totally the case here. And I’m a sucker for a hero so impossibly perfect that you can’t help but WISH he existed in real life. And I'm a sucker for funny good ol' american teenage dialogue à la "crap", "holy cow" and "chill dude"..... and well, one can never get too bored with a good fictional-yet-with-a-tiny-window-of-possibility story, right?

Honestly, the books aren’t that bad. Ok, so they’re not Harry Potter level as some are saying, but they are definitely going on my “Books I’ll read again” pile as opposed to my “Books I read once, enjoyed and then sold off to Gilbert for 20 cents” pile.

Basically, the story hunted my mind while I tried to concentrate on other more mundane things, like work. While I was at the office, all I could think of when I wasn't reading them, was how much I wish I was. So as soon as I clocked my time card at the office and yelled my Flinstone's "yabadaba doo" line, I'd run to the subway, pull out my book from my purse, dive in and not come up for air until I had to call it a night and go to sleep (somewhere in that sequence I would get home, mumble a few words about my day to hubby and swallow some dinner although it's all a little foggy). I guess you can see how blogging, emailing, socializing and any other form of human contact got somehow lost along the way.

So yeah, you can say I get a teensy bit obsessed about these sort of things (same thing happened with la novela a few months ago, remember?).

On the other hand, no way in hell I’m going to watch the movie which I hear is out. I simply can not bear the idea of Summit Entertainment ruining this for me.

Cheers,
Fned.

hehe, one of my friends is obsessed with that series! She said that it is by no means sophisticated reading but it is very addictive. I want to read it sometime but I should probably avoid it because I'm sure I will get sucked into it completely like you! What is the gal's idea of premarital sex? Apparently the author is Mormon. Happy Holidays! <3

So I do something backwards. I watch the movie first and then read the books. I find it doesn't mess with my head as much that way.

Now I did see the movie and as I posted on my blog, I am so in love with the dude in it. Really I think you should see it but if you hate it I don't want to be the one responsible for it. lol.

I should have asked for the books for xmas!

On that note, Happy Holidays Miss Fned! Have a great Navidad!

I asked for the books from my dad, so we'll see if I get them when I go back tomorrow. Hopefully not though, since it sounds like if I did, then no sightseeing for poor Ben, just lots of watching me read!

Kumichan: It really is an addictive story. I'm actually itching to going back and reading the first book all over again but am afraid I'll get hooked on finishing the entire series all over again.

(SPOILER ALERT - just in case)

Anyway, according to Meyers: the act of biting your loved one and turning her into a vampire just like you in order to be able to live out your eternal life together hand and hand (ie having sex) is a big no-no before you get married. I'm serious. That is the vampire's condition.

(END OF SPOILER ALERT)

My Way: Ok, now I HAVE to go watch the movie because I couldn't help peeking at the Youtube clips and I agree with ya girl: Edward is HOT!

And a very Joyeux Navidad to you too girl!!!

Andromeda: Yeah... I think you better start reading the first one on your flight BACK to France... will make the plane ride seem much shorter!

Merry X-mas, Happy B-Day and have a safe trip!

I'm telling you - be careful girl! Do you want to end up like Samo and I - güeving it out for 6 hours or more on our annual Corazón Salvaje binge? (We're about two thirds thru it - still got 4 tapes to go). We are HOPELESSLY OBSESSED!!! And now the others are coming and they'll get sucked into it too!! Or maybe we'll just sneak away and be closet-watchers in Sam's room where there's an old TV and VCR... though I gotta say, that poor Sony has seen better days! Someone has to give it a little potch on the side every few minutes, or it goes into murky-mode where the images get stretched out and the sound is muted...
On the other hand, being obsessed has its good side... sooner or later you come to your senses and snap out of it with an overflowing abundance of energy (could it be from guilt?), ready to jump into LIFE once again! The trick is to balance the obsession in a way that those around you can tolerate! So far, Car has accepted ours...

Apparently the movie comes out here on the 7th of January, if the big posters I keep seeing are to be believed ;)

HA Ha Ha! Yeah- they're bad! The movie actually wasn't that bad, but you have to read the books first or I think it would be just a random collection of scenes loosely based around some sort of story...
