Anyway, I realized this weekend that because of this, a lot of the music I carry on my iPod is french. Yes, I admit it, I do have the classics from Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel on it... but I also listen to several artists I would have never known about had I not come to France and which over the years I've become a fan of. Although for the most part the music falls in the Pop and RnB categories (not everyone's cup of tea, I know), I really do enjoy listening to these artists and singing the words to their songs while I walk to work in the mornings.
So I decided to share.
Here are my current Top 5 French Male Singers.
I realize not everyone will be able to understand the words to these songs and I started out with the intention of translating each one, but then I remembered that music is a universal language. If you don't believe me just ask Madonna and her millions of fans around the world which I doubt understand all the words to her songs -- This said, if you do want the translations to these songs (some of them are really funny) just let me know, I'll be happy to email them to you. =)

Renan Luce - Le Lettre (The Letter)
Bénabar - Le Velo (The Bike)
Not the actual video of Bénabar
Christophe Maé - Va voir ailleurs (Go look elsewhere)
Not the actual video of Christophe Maé
Corneille - Parce qu'on vient de loin (Because we come from afar)
Tryo - Désolé pour hier soir (Sorry about last night)
Now wasn't that fun? How about letting me know who you're listening to currently? I'm always eager to hear new stuff!!!!

What a strange law! Is it to keep American popular culture from invading the air waves?
I absolutely hate pop in the US but for some reason French pop sounds so cool. But then again I used to think some reggaeton sounded cool until I realized what they were saying, lol.
I am so out of date when it comes to music. Lately, I have been enjoying this song called "Limon y Sal" by Julieta Venegas. I believe she is a Mexicana too!
I love the whole "Limón y Sal" album! I will admit that my Spanish music tastes are pretty mainstream still: Shakira, Julieta Venegas, Alejandro Sanz, Maná are some favorites. But then again even in English I'm never the one listening to the hot new band. My boyfriend despairs, he prefers Spanish (ie. from Spain) and some French hip hop which is of course much cooler than my happy pop.
Good stuff! I had only ever heard of Corneille but I love him. Such a beautiful voice. How did you come across these songs?
Looking forward to your fave female singers!
Kumichan: hahah.... I know what you mean... the only reggaeton I ever heard was the group "Proyecto Uno" with the "Latinos", "Brinca" and "El Tiburon" songs which were awesome (BACK IN THE 90s)... Still, I don't think I could put up with it 24/7 on the radio.... BTW, I like Julieta Venegas' last album too (Limon y Sal) which I heard about from my sister. It's funny, I didn't like her first albums that came out when I was living back home, but this one is really good! =)
Emily: Girl, you just named like 60% of the spanish speaking artists that I absolutely love (if you add in Ricardo Arjona and Elefante it goes up to 80%)! I like Spanish groups too like Estopa and La Oreja de Van Gogh.... French Hip Hop? Hmmmm.. There's a few good french artists in this domain, but like with the reggeaton, once you've heard one, you've heard them all.... ;)
Hi Jonnifer!: I agree, Corneille is really good (and pretty cute too, don't you think?). These are a few of the songs I like from french artists I've been listening to for quite some time now. I either like the melodies to their songs, or their voices or their words.... or all above!!! I'll be sure to post the female singers tonight! Thanks for stopping by! :)

I really like all of those songs! But I tend to like French music in general, I often find the lyrics very clever. I did a même a month or so ago that asked people to list seven songs they liked, so you're already half-way there!
Unfortunately my computer is still acting up and I can't get audio out of it so I'll have to wait to listen to your song selection =( otherwise I've been driving hubby crazy with Carla Bruni's new release "Comme Si de Rien N'Etait". The other album is Coldplay's " Viva la Vida"...love those guys.
Samantha: I know what you mean, I chuckle everytime I hear the words to "Le Velo" from Bénabar, specially because we live down the road to the Buttes de Chaummont! ;) I have been meaning to post my favortie 5 female french singers.... will that count towards the meme??? ;)
Mariella: WOW! Didn't know Carla Bruni Sarokzy's album was being sold in the US, or that people listened to it!!! Haven't heard it yet, but I really like one of her previous songs... I'll post it in my fave 5 female singers soon. As for Coldplay...... better not mention that name in front of hubby. He absolutely HATES them... I'm less viceral and find their music quite nice although a little repetitive. =)

Ok, I don't know what he was singing, but I do know that Renan Luce is YUMMY to look at! He's so cute!
I like the idea of this post! I'm totally going to copy you and post some Spanish music that I like over on my blog!
I am from Quebec and I discovered this new singer this week. It is absolutely fabulous, she sings and plays piano very well. Go to my blog to know more about her, she's called Coeur de Pirate: http://nuestra-pequena-ventana.blogspot.com/2008/09/coeur-de-pirate-nouvelle-dcouverte.html
Her very nice MySpace page lets you hear two of her songs: http://www.myspace.com/coeurdepirate
That certainly is a strange law, but I guess it kind of makes sense...to prevent, as kumichan83 suggested, American music from taking over radio stations.
Although I don't speak French, I love the sound of it in music. I have been listening to Teri Moïse...her "Les poèmes de Michelle " album is really good. I also have a CD called "Acoustic France" with classic and contemporary songs by some really good singer-songwriters. I'll have to give the suggestions from the other comments a try. Thanks!
Mexpat: That Renan Luce is really cute and his album is very good too. I totally recomen youtub'ing him out!! He's in all his videos too so double the reason for looking him up! ;)
Julie Dufresne: I just spent the morning listening to Coeur de Pirate... love her music! I haven't seen her CD here yet, but will definetly be looking for it! Thanks for the link and for stopping by!!!
Jeff: The french are very touchy on the subject of their language! At the bank I work for if we send out communications and there is ANY word in english that isn't translated to french we'll have the union on our backs in a matter of minutes! I think it's a good thing to try and prevent the language from disappearing (or from mutating into something different) but sometimes they can get a little TOO anal about the whole thing! Thanks for stopping by and for your suggestions of music, I hadn't yet heard of Teri Moïse... I'm definitely checking her(?) out!!
